Another of the grand old Victorian "Painted Ladies" in Port Townsend that has become a bed and breakfast is the Old Consulate Inn. It was originally built by F.W. Hastings in 1889. From 1908 to 1911 it served as the residence and office of the German Consul.The Old Consulate Inn website provides a full description of its history and present day accomodations as a B & B. The following is a brief excerpt from the history page:
"During the Inn's tenure as the German Consulate the mansion's lower level was used to house German sailors who had escaped from work ships after being "shanghaied". These seamen were offered the protection of "foreign soil" where they could safely await passage home aboard a German National ship passing through. This lower level has now been converted into a billiard and game room."

Seems quite odd somehow that a German consulate would be located in Port Townsend. Any historical data as to how that came to be? This is one of your many architectural treasures in PT. Actually an amazing number have been preserved.
We have a few houses like that in Terrell, but I dont think any of them look as nice as that one.

A number of years ago we had an author in the schools who was from Port Townsend. The whimsical illustrations in her childrens' books were based on the local. That looks like Albion Pig's house.
