Venus or Galatea?

Continuing the images of the Haller Fountain and Terrace Steps Park, a plaque near the fountain explains why the statue is commonly referred to as Galatea rather than Venus.

Do they clean the statue? Most of the statues in Boston I have taken pictures of have bird droppings all over them.
