Y is for Yawl

A couple of years ago during the Wooden Boat Festival we enjoyed an afternoon sail aboard the 90' yawl Odyssey seen here. A yawl is a rigging configuration on a sailboat with a main mast forward and a small mast at the stern of the vessel stepped behind or aft the rudder post. Check here for a good definition and history of yawls. Built in 1938 for a granddaughter of the Vanderbilt family, the Odyssey is now managed by a Sea Scout unit in Tacoma, Washington. It has a rich sailing history which is best summarized here on its website.
Visit ABC WEDNESDAY today for more takes on the letter Y.

I'm stuck on that 1940 movie The Philadelphia Story and I hear Kate Hepburn talking about the boat being yar.
