Theme Day, June 2008 - My corner local shop...

About three blocks from our place is Aldrich's Market, the favorite corner grocery store of many folks in this uptown Port Townsend residential area. We feel fortunate to have Aldrich's just a quick walk away when we realize in the middle of cooking that we're out of eggs or butter or other essentials. This is small town personal service at its best.
All the varied services of this historic business can be found on their website - http://www.aldrichs.com/. Below is an excerpt from that site:

Welcome to Aldrich's
Aldrich's Market first opened in 1895 when Clark Aldrich purchased a variety store from Robert Gray and operated it on the southwest corner of Lawrence and Tyler streets. In those early years it was known best for selling school books and stationary, but also had confectionery, fruits, vegetables, and tobacco.
On August 4, 2003 Aldrich's caught fire and was totally destroyed. The community grieved the loss of the oldest grocery store in Washington State, but owners David Hamilton and Jonathon Ryweck vowed to rebuild. On July 16, 2005 Aldrich's reopened with the help of an outpouring of support from the community and is once again the hub of the Uptown business community.
On January 31, 2007, Aldrich's Market changed hands for only the fourth time in its 112 year history when it was acquired by a family enterprise comprised of Scott Fukuda and his parents Milton and Renee Fukuda.

Not only a wonderful place, but a wonderful set of images.

This store looks like one "Louis" would really enjoy. Stores like this have the personal touch the Safeways of the world lost long ago - and "Louis" writes this as someone who worked for Safeway for almost 30 years, including a time at Corporate.

Re your comments about Pâtisserie Philippe, he really does a superb job. Walking into his place is like walking into a little corner of Paris.

That is quite a story Aldrich's has! It looks very upscale in its rebuilt digs. Fun to see a small plane as part of the decor, too! It's nice to hear it is currently a family business.
