Sunday Shadows

Adding to the pleasure of a ferry trip last summer was this young lady, playing beautifully on her violin. Seemingly unaware of other passengers, bathed in soft light from the window, she was lovely to see, as well as to hear.

A is for Admiralty Inlet

This photo is taken from Point Hudson in downtown Port Townsend looking northeast across the waters of Admiralty Inlet toward Whidbey Island and Mt. Baker in the distance. Admiralty Inlet is the major passageway for maritime commerce into and out of Puget Sound waters.

From Wikipedia: All sea vessels must pass through Admiralty Inlet to enter or leave Puget Sound, except those small enough to use Deception Pass. This fact led to the selection of Port Townsend on the Quimper Peninsula as the official port of entry for the Puget Sound region during the early days of commerce in the area. It also led to the federal decision in the late 1890s to construct Fort Worden, Fort Casey, and Fort Flagler around Admiralty Inlet as a "Triangle of Fire" for the protection of Puget Sound from a hostile fleet.

ABC Wednesday - Landing in Seattle

After a trip down south, we returned yesterday to the Puget Sound by air. In this first shot we were banking over Seattle to turn into our final approach for landing at Sea-Tac Airport to the south of the city.
This was looking eastward over Elliott Bay, downtown Seattle, the Port of Seattle and the southern end of Lake Washington. The Cascade Mountains to the east, covered by the clouds.

After our turn to the south, this was looking north and west across downtown, the Magnolia peninsula neighborhood and the sound beyond.

With the late afternoon sun to our west, we were just seconds from touchdown at Sea-Tac, but Port Townsend was still a two hour journey away by car. No matter. We had just spent a wonderful week on the Texas Gulf Coast with old friends and family and were happy to be home again.

A Sound View

About thirty miles south of Port Townsend is Mt. Walker. It is a small mountain of some 3,000 feet on the northeast edge of the Olympic Mountains and from its summit lookouts, it provides sweeping views of the Puget Sound basin. This view is looking southeast across Hood Canal and Kitsap Peninsula toward the largest mountain in the Cascade Range, Mt. Rainier 14, 411 feet. This photo was taken last fall during conditions that prompted a temperature inversion and smog layer seen here. Fortunately, they are not the norm in this area.
