Morning Sky at Point Wilson

The lighthouse at Point Wilson is one of Fort Worden State Park's best places for sky watching in Port Townsend. It also offers great views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey Island and the Cascade Mountains.

Memorial Day

We'll be away for the Memorial Day weekend so an early post today in rememberance of those who gave their lives in service to our country. This was taken a few months ago on a frosty morn at Fort Worden's Military Cemetery. A safe and enjoyable weekend to all.

N is for North Beach...

... and last night's sunset.
North Beach offers great views toward the San Juan Islands and Canada's Vancouver Island. It's a rugged mostly rocky beach and a favorite for locals to run their dogs and/or catch a sunset over the Strait of Juan de Fuca or perhaps to watch a good storm blowing in from the Pacific or Canada.

Foggy, Frosty morn at Fort Worden

Last weekend we enjoyed a pretty Saturday morning at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. The park's history as a military post and all the activities and lodging information can be found here. Included are beautiful hiking trails through the wooded hills and along the beaches. This light and shadow image was taken at the park's military cemetery.

Sky watching

A common sight in our winter skies is the unending parade of gulls working a stretch of shoreline. We enjoy watching them on our beach walks along the bluffs as they catch the updrafts from winds off the water and glide for long distances down the beach while scanning the surf, sand and tidal pools below for their next meal. They then slowly work their way back up the beach and maneuver into position for yet another long sail down the shore. All in a day's work for these sturdy gliders.

Sky Watch

Last weekend was the 25th annual West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium held on the beach at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.
This first picture was taken Sunday morning at Point Wilson with the fog just beginning to lift. Later sun breaks were a welcome sight for hundreds of those enjoying the three day event.

Point Wilson Lighthouse

It was cold and mostly cloudy with biting winds here in PT today as a weather front moved through. Some glimpses of the sun were nice, but short-lived. Good day for a drive out to the Point Wilson Lighthouse. It sits on a point where the waters of Admiralty Inlet merge with the Strait of Juan de Fuca and is where the original lighthouse was first pressed into service in 1879. It's located in Fort Worden State Park (where the movie, An Officer and A Gentleman was filmed). The park is a popular retreat, conference and education center year-round.
