North Beach
A long and rugged stretch of beach and bluffs runs along the north side of Port Townsend and the Quimper Peninsula. It's a favorite haunt for locals that enjoy walking or beachcombing or running their dogs off the leash between the tides. Some enjoy looking for small shards of sea glass that turn up regularly in the sand deposited from the old dumps along the coast many years ago. It's a beautiful stretch bordering the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The snow-capped peaks of the Cascade Range are seen here while looking east toward Point Wilson Lighthouse.

Sky Watch - Stormy morning on the Strait
Sky watching on a sunny, but stormy day at North Beach in Port Townsend. The tanker seen here in the Strait of Juan de Fuca was approaching Admiralty Inlet for passage into Puget Sound waters. A profusion of sky images from around the world can be found every week at Sky Watch Friday.
Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all who have left comments with good thoughts and prayers during my absence. Health issues do come along in life, but I'm happy to say things are looking good and I'm tickled to be getting back to blogging again. Looking forward to once again visiting all the great sites in our photo blogging community.
On another note - Nancy and I have spent the last three years living mostly in Port Townsend, but also in our home in Omaha, Nebraska. We are now settled back in Omaha and our return to the Pacific Northwest will be as often as possible. My plan is to continue posting to Port Townsend Daily Photo for a while as I begin a new blog featuring the heartland area of America around Omaha. Hope you will stop by from time to time. S is for Sea Glass

One of the pleasures of beach walking for some here on the Quimper Peninsula is collecting sea glass, also known as beach glass or mermaid tears. These little fragments of discarded glass items (mostly bottles) have been rolled and tumbled by sea water, rocks and sand for years and are washed ashore daily by wave and tidal action. The glass pictured here was collected by my wife, Nancy, on a three hour stroll last week along Port Townsend's North Beach on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The Seattle Times recently published an article written by Port Townsend freelance journalist, Ross Anderson about the growing popularity of sea glass which can be read here.

Cruisin' with J Pod
Enjoyed a great visit to the San Juan Islands over the weekend which included taking a Port Townsend whale watching vessel at Puget Sound Express to Friday Harbor. We departed Port Townsend on Friday morning and caught up to the orca whales along the west coast of San Juan Island. A beautiful day it was as we cruised along so close to those magnificent animals watching them move northward so gracefully near the shore.J Pod is one of three groups of orcas that frequent these waters and includes only about twenty five whales. More tomorrow about the whales and whale watching services.

Catch of the day
On our way home last Sunday from the tulip fields in Skagit Valley we stopped at Deception Pass and decided to take a boat tour offered at the bridge. Shortly after we had gotten underway, we were especially fortunate to witness an unexpected bonus of nature's day to day routine. We watched in awe as a bald eagle suddenly dropped from the sky in front of our boat, snatched a fish from the water and headed up into the trees for an evening meal. By the time our boat had quietly motored up to the bank beneath the eagle's tree, he had devoured most of his catch, but I was able to get a few quick shots before he sailed off. During the hour long tour we were given an informative and lively presentation by the crew and we also spotted seals, porpoises, a peregrine falcon and more eagles. Thumbs up for Deception Pass Tours.

Sky Watch - East and West

These two photos were taken from the same spot on a beautiful late summer evening at Point Wilson lighthouse. After shooting the moon rising in the east over Admiralty Inlet, I did a 180 and caught the sun setting on the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the west. One of those memorable evenings on the beach.Wednesday, April 2, 2008
To Sail a Kite
"Hey, Papa! Kite's up!" It was a beautiful day to begin the month of April and a trip to the beach at Point Wilson was a natural for our granddaughters on Spring Break.
