Sea Creatures

A detailed shot of Haller Fountain in downtown Port Townsend.
I have often featured this little fountain and small city park
over the years and those posts are seen here.

Fiddler on the green

We've enjoyed sunny, warmer weather in recent days and signs of the impending spring are showing everywhere. On a walk down the Taylor Street park steps yesterday we enjoyed the peaceful tunes of this musician sitting off to himself playing not for an audience, but perhaps as a rite of spring.

Galatea welcomes the stars

Locals love to include Haller Fountain in many of the downtown events throughout the year. It is always fun to see the statue of Galatea in various states of dress for the occasions.

At the opening ceremonies of last fall's 9th Annual Port Townsend Film Festival, Galatea was at her stellar best to help welcome guest stars, film actress Piper Laurie and TV's American Movie Classics host Robert Osborne, seen here at left.

Venus or Galatea?

Continuing the images of the Haller Fountain and Terrace Steps Park, a plaque near the fountain explains why the statue is commonly referred to as Galatea rather than Venus.

Oh, Christmas tree

Yesterday, with a light snow falling, we walked downtown for lunch and shopping and stopped by the community Christmas tree and found ourselves, well...in a reflective mood.

One more circle

Aengus enjoys a cool drink from a new doggie fountain during one of our strolls downtown, while his best bud and constant companion assists by turning on the water.

ABC Wednesday - Galatea

If Port Townsend had an official town center or square or piazza it might be the little city park on Taylor and Washington Street that is the location of Haller Fountain which has also been known for over a hundred years as Galatea. She is shown here as seen today with a fountain full of soap suds. Perhaps it's wash day or local kids having a little fun. Always interesting over the years to find her in various states of dress or undress. She has appeared on this blog several times and those posts can be seen here.

ABC Wednesday is hosted by Mrs. Nesbitt and can be found here.

Man's Best Friend

Was a grand morning for getting out and around and enjoying a spectacular sunrise. It appeared that not many shared my enthusiasm for an early walk until I ran into Sam and his owner at the Haller Fountain. Sam had already been for a run and swim and was ready for refreshment. Here he enjoys a cool drink at the newly installed water fountain fit for man or beast - it also features a lower doggie bowl. A couple of drinks and Sam trotted away with a happy face and wagging tail.

Sky Watch Friday

Yesterday was a good day for sky watching while walking around town. There were no April showers, just intermittent sunshine and a moody pattern of dark and bright clouds gliding across shades of blue. The pool of water around Haller Fountain reflected the changes overhead. Here a happy child beams after tossing her shiny coin into the floating clouds on water. What might that wish have been?

Theme Day - Water

This little peninsula seaport town is nearly surrounded by the sea and lies in a climate well known for its rainfall, but it is the Haller Fountain of Aphrodite or perhaps Galatea, the sea nymph, that I've chosen to represent today's water theme for Port Townsend. It has been loved, abused and restored numerous times by residents of this community for more than a hundred years. The seating and walking area of the small park surrounding it has just been enlarged and beautified again. Like fountains everywhere its soft and melodious water patter beckons, soothes and nourishes those who gather near - as well as, I believe, the whole communitys' very soul.

The following are some 170 plus other City Daily Photo Blogs around the world that are participating in todays theme about water. Enjoy!!
